Dickinson Wright PLLC is pleased to announce that Attorney Charles R. Spies has joined the firm’s Washington, D.C. office as a Member. Also joining the Dickinson Wright Political Law team with him are Associate attorney Sloane Carlough and former Mitt Romney for Senate and Right to Rise USA staffer Jessica Brouckaert.
Mr. Spies, with over two decades of experience providing strategic political law counsel in Washington D.C. is recognized as one of the top election law attorneys in America. He counsels a broad range of corporations, organizations, candidates, officeholders, and individuals confronting challenges and opportunities at the intersection of political and issue campaigns, government ethics, law and public policy. He serves as counsel to multiple campaigns, super PACs, trade associations, and non-profit organizations. He is currently Counsel to the Republican Attorneys General Association and has previously served as Election Law Counsel for the RNC, General Counsel and CFO for the RGA, CFO and Counsel for the Romney for President campaign, and Counsel to Federal Election Commission Chairman Darryl R. Wold.
Mr. Spies has established and served as counsel for two of the most prominent super PACs in history, Restore Our Future supporting Mitt Romney in 2012 and Right to Rise USA supporting Jeb Bush in 2016. In 2015, Mr. Spies was named to The Politico 50 – a list of “thinkers, doers and visionaries transforming American politics” for his work that “created a playbook that allows candidates to maximize the new flood of money into politics.” He is nationally ranked in Chambers USA as a top Political Law attorney, is a Washingtonian Magazine “Top Lawyer” and a “Super Lawyer,” and has been listed as one of the “Most Powerful People in Washington” in GQ Magazine and a “Top Lobbyist” in The Hill.
Mr. Spies has served on the American Bar Association Standing Committee on Election Law, was a Fellow at the Georgetown University School of Politics and Public Service, has lectured at the US Law Institute, Notre Dame Law School, Yale, Georgetown University Law Center and the Benjamin Cardozo School of Law, spoken at the University of Chicago Institute of Politics, been featured on an ABA Administrative Law Division panel, testified before the FEC and state boards of election, and participated in working groups for the OAS Unit for the Promotion of Democracy. He received his B.A. from the University of Michigan and his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center.
