Dickinson Wright is pleased to announce that Alex Courtade has joined the firm’s Austin office as Of Counsel.
Alex is an intellectual property attorney with a focus on IP transactions and patents for emerging and complex technologies. He has nearly two decades of experience guiding software and hardware innovations, counseling in areas such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, cybersecurity, blockchain, payment systems, networks, communications, and hardware devices.
Alex has advised on the full lifecycle of patent and IP development—from invention harvesting and portfolio management to global filing strategies and transactional matters. His work has included collaborating with senior executives, engineers, and cross-functional teams to align intellectual property strategy with business objectives. He has also led open source software programs, overseen outside counsel relationships, and managed patent budgets and renewals.
Alex has prosecuted hundreds of patent applications across software, finance, electronics, telecommunications, and computer hardware, while also advising on licensing issues, IP strategy, and pre-infringement investigations. Before entering law, he gained practical industry experience as a software developer, which continues to inform his ability to bridge technical and legal perspectives.
Alex is a member of the Austin Intellectual Property Law Association and the Texas State Bar, Intellectual Property Section. He received his B.S. in Computer Science from Rice University and his J.D. from The University of Texas School of Law.
