Brian T. Mangum

Brian Mangum brings over fifteen years of intellectual property legal experience, during which he has obtained patents and other IP assets for several of the largest patent filing companies in the world as well as individual inventors. Brian has also litigated numerous intellectual property matters in federal courts and before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board. 

Brian now focuses much of his practice on helping emerging companies establish themselves as innovative leaders in their respective industries. Clients rely on Brian’s diverse legal and technical experience to help them develop and implement strategic intellectual property plans. Brian also counsels on growth strategies and corporate structures, particularly to startup founders and international companies seeking to expand into the United States market.

Brian is also familiar with the unique challenges that face in-house counsel, having served over four years as an associate general counsel at a mid-sized technology company that developed and marketed large-format lithium ion battery systems in a variety of industries.

Prominent Assignments

  • Provides patent landscape analysis and strategic portfolio development advice to multinational corporations regarding technologies such as cloud computing services, mobile devices, autonomous vehicle systems, medical devices, and battery management. Brian’s counsel helped these clients obtain patent protection while adding tens of millions of dollars in estimated value.
  • Counsels emerging U.S. and foreign-based companies on business and market strategies, corporate structure, and intellectual property and assists them in implementing the most effective strategies within U.S. legal and investment frameworks.
  • Serves as outside general counsel to emerging technology companies.
  • Successfully defended an international fabless semiconductor company against claims of patent infringement in IPR proceedings before the PTAB. In five proceedings, Brian’s team invalidated the competitor’s asserted patents, saving the client hundreds of millions in potential damages.
  • Helped a seed-state IoT start-up develop a clear intellectual property strategy and gain Series A fundraising through utility and design patent prosecution and counseling.
