Eric J. DeGroat



Eric J. DeGroat is a member of the law firm of Dickinson Wright, PLLC, residing at the firm’s Troy, Michigan office. He concentrates his practice in the areas of commercial aviation, banking and financial institutions, corporate, franchise and real estate law. He represents clients in matters locally, nationally and internationally.

In the area of commercial aviation, Mr. DeGroat has handled transactions that involve the acquisition, disposition and leasing of full aircraft, airframes, engines and parts to support a global supply chain for airlines, leasing companies and parts suppliers. He has experience with aircraft registrations with the FAA and International Registry, interface with regulatory agencies, technical/records consultants, DAR's, MRO's, asset managers, appraisers, lenders and other support parties. Other areas of his expertise include due diligence for assets and transaction parties; entity formation and governance; secured financing, capitalization, and negotiation of equity platforms; negotiation of maintenance and storage services agreements; and broker/consulting agreements. Eric's civil aviation practice also involves acquisition, disposition and leasing of private aircraft and fractional interests for individuals and business fleets, financing and negotiating hangar and storage agreements.

Mr. DeGroat’s real estate practice involves virtually all aspects of commercial real estate transactions involving the acquisition, disposition, leasing, development, government entitlements, planning and land use approvals and appeals, and landlord/tenant issues relating to office, retail, industrial and multi-family affordable housing properties.

In other practice areas, Mr. DeGroat routinely represents and counsels clients in corporate law. He has organized hundreds of business entitles, ranging from professional practices, operating and holding companies, taxable and tax-exempt. He also consults his clients with regard to general management, governance and operating issues affecting various legal structures. He coordinates a team approach with other tax and accounting professionals as a quarterback for his client’s ongoing legal needs.

In the banking and financial institutions areas, Mr. DeGroat also represents both lenders and borrowers in commercial lending matters Involving real estate, construction, working capital, equipment, credit enhancement, bond issues, participations in syndicated facilities, tax-credit financing, various government direct and guaranteed financing programs, and private placement offerings and capital structuring.

In the area of franchising and licensing, Mr. DeGroat represents both franchisors and franchisees, involving real estate and development, franchise operations, negotiating area development and agreements, franchise and trademark enforcement, work-outs, assignments and transfers.
