Three Attorneys Join Dickinson Wright's Phoenix Office

Dickinson Wright PLLC is pleased to announce that Attorneys Derek W. Kaczmarek, David R. Jojola, and Giselle C. Alexander have joined the firm’s Phoenix office.

Derek W. Kaczmarek joins the firm as a Member. He represents taxpayers in tax disputes involving the IRS and state and local taxing authorities. His experience includes representation in cases involving: income and employment taxes; tax fraud; alleged tax shelters; IRS promoter investigations; estate and gift tax; innocent spouse relief; U.S. Tax Court trials; and trust fund recovery penalties. He is counsel of record in twenty published decisions in the U.S. Tax Court. These published opinions include three issues of first impression. His most recent trials involved 831(b) captive insurance, a fraud penalty stemming from a Ponzi scheme and an estate tax case involving a family limited partnership and a charitable lead annuity trust. Prior to entering private practice, Mr. Kaczmarek was a senior trial attorney with the Internal Revenue Service. He is a Certified Specialist in Tax Law, Arizona Board of Legal Specialization.

Mr. Kaczmarek is a member of the American Bar Association’s Section of Taxation and Chair-Elect of the State Bar of Arizona’s Tax Law Section. He is recognized as a “Top Lawyer” by Las Vegas’s North Valley Magazine and is an AV Preeminent® Rated Attorney by Martindale-Hubbell. Mr. Kaczmarek received his B.A. from DePauw University, his J.D. (with honors) from Indiana University Mauer School of Law, his M.B.A. (Finance) from the Indiana University Kelley School of Business and his LL.M. in Taxation from New York University School of Law.

David R. Jojola joins the firm as Of Counsel. His practice encompasses tax litigation and appeals, corporate, partnership and disregarded entity taxation, estate and gift taxation, excise taxes, income taxation, innocent spouse relief, and payroll taxes. Prior to entering private practice, he served as a senior trial attorney in the Los Angeles office of the Internal Revenue Service, where he served as a fraud specialist and innocent spouse coordinator. Mr. Jojola is a Certified Specialist in Tax Law, Arizona Board of Legal Specialization. He is a member of the State Bar of Arizona and the State Bar of New Mexico. Mr. Jojola received his B.B.A. in Finance from the University of New Mexico’s Anderson School of Management and his J.D. from the University of New Mexico School of Law.

Giselle C. Alexander joins the firm as Of Counsel. She practices primarily in the area of tax controversy at all levels of the process – audits, administrative appeals, and litigation adverse to federal, state, and local entities. Prior to starting her law career, she worked in the Business Tax Services Group of a Big Four accounting firm, where she focused on tax planning. Ms. Alexander is a Board Member of the Arizona State Board of Accountancy, a member of the American Bar Association’s Section of Taxation, State and Local Tax (SALT) Committee, and is Vice Chair of the State Bar of Arizona Tax Law Section’s Executive Council. She is recognized as a Southwest Super Lawyers Rising Star and as a “Top Lawyer” by North Valley Magazine. Ms. Alexander received her B.S. from Arizona State University’s W.P. Carey School of Business, her J.D. from Arizona State University’s Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law, and her LL.M. in Taxation from Northwestern University Law School.
