Attorney Scott Smith Quoted in the Grand Rapids Business Journal about Michigan's Industrial Personal Property Tax

April 7, 2014
Dickinson Wright Attorney Scott Smith was recently quoted in a Grand Rapids Business Journal article titled “Replacing the PPT on industry: up to voters”. Michigan Lieutenant Governor Brian Calley recently signed legislation that would replace funding lost by the phase-out of the industrial personal property tax – if enough Michigan voters say yes to the August ballot proposal.

Mr. Smith was part of a Grand Rapids-area group involved in drafting the legislation. He commented on a part of the proposal that included a separate Essential Services Assessment which was later dropped from the package. He told the Grand Rapids Business Journal that it was “feared there would be legal challenges to the ESA regarding whether the level of assessment was going to be an amount proportional to the benefit the business received.”
