Dickinson Wright LLP, Canada’s leading full-service business law firm specializing in cross-border counsel today announced that partner and Franchising Group Co-Chair, Ned Levitt, was appointed to the International Committee of the International Franchising Association (IFA).

“The tremendous growth in international franchising we have all witnessed over the past decade or so, is just the beginning. I am very excited to be named to the International Committee of the IFA, an organization devoted to protecting a business model that has created so much economic success worldwide,” said Levitt. “As an attorney who has devoted my career to franchising and as a long-time member of both the Canadian Franchising Association (CFA) and the IFA, I have paid close attention to the issues that challenge the franchise business model. I look forward to working with the members of that committee to embrace the opportunities before us over the next few years in North America and beyond.”

The International Committee of the IFA is responsible for directing the activities of the IFA International Development in its role to assist franchise companies to develop and expand their international operations. The committee achieves this mission by providing technical assistance and information, along with organizing and supporting franchise trade missions and U.S. pavilions at selected franchise exhibitions outside the United States. Mr. Levitt will use his knowledge and experience with Canadian franchise expansions to assist the committee regarding this traditional first port of embarkation for international expansion.

“We are pleased to welcome Ned to the Committee. His experience in international franchise law will make him a valuable addition to the IFA's International Committee,” said Josh Merin, Director of International Affairs at the IFA.

Mr. Levitt has been a leading Canadian franchise lawyer for more than 40 years. Over his lengthy career, he has overseen and directed his client’s franchise-related cases, many of which have resulted in landmark decisions. As one of Canada’s leading authorities in franchise law, he has advised the Ontario, BC, Manitoba, PEI and Canadian governments on the establishment of franchise legislation. Mr. Levitt is a prolific writer and frequently publishes precedent legal services on the topic of franchise law which are used by lawyers across Canada in their franchise legal work, notably, O’Brien’s Forms & Precedents, LexisNexis/Butterworth’s Commercial Forms and LexisNexis/Butterworth’s Canadian Franchise Legislation. Mr. Levitt is also a frequent lecturer on franchising for such organizations such as the Canadian Franchise Association, International Franchise Association, American Bar Association Franchise Forum, as well as at a number of universities.

In addition to receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award as a member of the CFA and having been a member of the IFA for more than two decades, Mr. Levitt is a member of the International Bar Association and the American Bar Association (Franchising Forum).
