DETROIT, Mich.—Mark F. Makower, a Member of Dickinson Wright PLLC, has been appointed as Chair of the Real Property Law Section for the State Bar of Michigan. Prior to this appointment, he served as Vice Chair, Chair Elect, Council Member and the chairperson of the Section's Committee on Condominiums, Cooperatives and PUDs. The Real Property Law Section is the second largest Section of the Bar, with approximately 3,500 members. As Chair, Mr. Makower will preside over nine Council meetings per year and is responsible for interfacing with the State Bar and running the day-to-day activities of the Section and its Committees. The Section has 15 special committees dealing with specialized practice areas and a number of standing and ad hoc committees, such as the Continuing Legal Education Committee that presents the distinguished Homeward Bound education series, Breakfast Rountables and a summer and winter conference; the Pro Bono Committee, which prepares and distributes public service pamphlets and coordinates pro bono representation on various cases; the Publishing Committee, which is responsible for the publication of the Quarterly Michigan Real Property Review; and the Legislative Committee, taking positions on legislation of interest to all real estate practitioners. The Section has a paid lobbyist, and is frequently asked by the Judiciary to be involved in various cases, filing amicus briefs on unique issues of real estate law. The Real Property Law Section is also home to the Michigan Land Title Standards committee that publishes Title Standards for the State. Mr. Makower counsels several hundred condominium and community associations, developers, contractors, and subcontractors in the areas of real estate development, condominium law, and construction law. He is one of only two Michigan members of the College of Community Association Lawyers, and also serves on the board of directors of the Community Associations Institute Michigan Chapter. Mr. Makower has held a Michigan builder's license since 1986 and has more than 30 years of hands-on experience in the construction and development field.
