Four Dickinson Wright attorneys - David J. Houston, Elise S. Levasseur, Norman D. Hawkins and Erin J. Stovel - will present a day-long seminar on the practical applications of employment law on November 3, 2009 at the Michigan State University Hotel & Conference Center in Lansing, Michigan. The seminar begins at 8:00 a.m. and concludes at 4:45 p.m. The seminar is ideal for human resources professionals, business owners, managers and supervisors, payroll professionals, and attorneys practicing labor and employment law. About the Presenters: David J. Houston practices in Dickinson Wright's Lansing office in the areas of labor and employment relations, and commercial and business litigation. Mr. Houston has handled the employment aspects of mergers from $1.5 million to $2.3 billion, and has tried bench and jury cases defending wrongful termination, race discrimination, disability discrimination, and sex discrimination claims. He has been a contributing author to "A Michigan Employer?s Guide to Drafting Your Employee Handbook," "Michigan Wage and Hour: A Practical Guide for Small Businesses," and "The Michigan Personnel File Survival Kit." Mr. Houston also has presented on topics such as "Hiring and Firing" and the "Employer's Guide to Maintaining Union-Free Status." He has been selected as one of the Best Lawyers in America and a Michigan Super Lawyer. He is a member of the Ingham County Bar Association, labor and employment law section, and a founding member and past chairperson; the Michigan Bar Association, labor and employment law and litigation sections; and the American Bar Association, labor and employment law and litigation sections. Levasseur is a Dickinson Wright attorney practicing in the Bloomfield Hills, Michigan office. She practices exclusively in immigration law. Ms. Levasseur is experienced in many aspects of immigration law such as permanent employment-based immigrant visas for multinational executives and managers; extraordinary ability aliens, and those with advanced degrees and skilled workers; national interest waivers; labor certifications; visa processing at U.S. Consulates; intracompany transferees; applications for citizenship and employment verification; and employer sanctions. Mr. Hawkins has tried jury cases defending wrongful discharge, race discrimination, sex discrimination, and breach of contract claims. He has drafted employment agreements, employee handbooks, independent contractor agreements, and non-compete and confidentiality agreements. Mr. Hawkins has authored labor and employment articles, been a presenter at professional education programs, and been an adjunct professor at Spring Arbor University.
