Dickinson Wright Labor and Employment Attorneys to Discuss Workplace Privacy

11/15/2007
Dickinson Wright experts in labor and employment law will present a seminar, "Workplace Privacy: Balancing a Employee's Right to Privacy with an Employer's Legitimate Need to Know", on Wednesday, November 28, 2007 at the Community House in Birmingham, Michigan. Employers must use effective, reasonable methods to monitor their employees' conduct. However, workplace privacy is governed by federal, state, and local laws that constantly evolve to keep pace with rapid technological developments. Employers must establish comprehensive policies and procedures to protect their ability to monitor employees while ensuring compliance with these laws, or risk serious consequences including declining workforce productivity and morale, governmental investigations, and costly litigation. The seminar will focus on the following topics dealing with privacy in the modern workplace: - Electronic and Video Surveillance - Monitoring Email, Internet Use, and Telephone Calls - The Federal Electronic Communications Privacy Act and Michigan's Eavesdropping Statute - Developing a Legal and Effective Electronic Information Systems Policy - Background Checks - Are you violating the Fair Credit Reporting Act? - Complying with Michigan's Social Security Number Privacy Act - Monitoring an Employee's Lifestyle or Off-Duty Behavior - Conducting Proper Workplace Searches - What, When, and How? The seminar will be held from 8:30 - 10:00 a.m., preceded by an 8:00 a.m. Continental breakfast, in the Hackett Room at the Birmingham Community House, 380 South Bates, Birmingham, Michigan. There is a $25 fee to attend, payable at the door. For more information, or to register, please contact Taline Hagopian, thagopian@dickinsonwright.com, 313.223.3785.
