5/12/2009
Dickinson Wright PLLC's Education Task Force, together with ROTHBURY and JFNew, awarded the grand prize in the Green Rocks! Sustainable Schools Contest. The Green Rocks! Contest posed the question "How can you make your school or community more sustainable?" to classrooms (grades 1-8) in Kent, Ottawa, Muskegon and Oceana (Michigan) county schools. Classes were asked to submit a one-page summary of their idea. Winners were selected based on originality, practicality, and application of sustainable, socially responsible, economically sound and environmentally friendly principles. The Grand Prize went to Karen Weaver's fifth grade class at Pinewood Elementary School in Jenison, Michigan. Mrs. Weaver's fifth graders recycled more the 3,000 pounds of plastic shopping bags and made sure that seven tons of phone books became home insulation. They won a pizza party from Little Caesars, complete with a personalized concert from guitarist Tom Stoepker of Vox Maui, and solar science kits for their classroom. "We were blown away by the sophistication of all the entries," said Leslee M. Lewis, a member in Dickinson Wright's Grand Rapids office and a contest organizer. "These amazing young people understood and explained the concepts of organic gardening, green building materials, live roofs, composting, alternative energy, recycling and fair trade. Clearly our future is in good hands." For more information, visit www.dickinsonwright.com.
