Dickinson Wright Attorneys Attend Training to Provide Legal Guidance to Veterans

Eight Dickinson Wright PLLC attorneys attended a seminar to help veterans with legal issues related to disability and pension benefits. The training, held on April 25 for a total of 50 attorneys, was sponsored by the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law Veterans Law Clinic and the Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association, with support and funding from the Michigan Legislature. Dickinson Wright attorneys attending the seminar include: Anthony P. Ferman, a corporate law associate in the Firm's Ann Arbor office Rebecca L. Takacs, a member focusing on environmental law in the Firm's Detroit office Theodore B. Sylwestrzak, a member focusing on bankruptcy law in the Firm's Detroit office Brian R. Balow, a member focusing on information technology and security law in the Firm's Bloomfield Hills office Kevin L. Pontius, of counsel in the Firm's Bloomfield Hills office, focusing his practice on intellectual property law J. Bryan Williams, a member focusing on corporate law in the Firm's Bloomfield Hills office William P. Shield, Jr., Jr., a member focusing on banking and financial services law in the Firm's Detroit office Markeisha J. Miner, a commercial and business litigation associate in the Firm's Detroit office The seminar covered the process for obtaining veterans benefits, explained the reasons benefits are denied, and discussed methods of appealing claim denials at the Board of Veterans Appeals and the Court of Appeals of Veterans Claims. Also discussed were effective advocacy strategies in dealing with the Veterans Affairs system and recent developments in the area of veterans law. In exchange for attending, participating attorneys are asked to accept at least one veterans law case on a pro bono basis.
