10/19/2007
Dickinson Wright PLLC has expanded its international gaming practice by establishing an associated office in Macau in Southeast Asia. The firm has associated with the Ramirez Law Firm, led by Antonio Ramirez, a Macau gaming law expert whose background includes private practice; serving as lead counsel for a French multinational corporation; serving as a legal adviser for the Macau government; and serving as associate general counsel for an American gaming operator in Macau. The Macau office plans on adding several other attorneys in the near future. "We're very excited to be able to expand our international service platform to our many clients interested in conducting business in Macau," said James A. Samborn, Chief Executive Officer, Dickinson Wright. "This association will benefit both Dickinson Wright's and the Ramirez Law Firm's respective international clients." Robert W. Stocker II, head of Dickinson Wright's gaming practice, commented, "The move into Macau underscores the firm's resolve to expand its Gaming Practice both nationally and internationally. We now have over 20 gaming attorneys, supported by a 240-attorney firm, who can provide expertise in over 38 legal areas relevant to the gaming industry." "Macau is a unique gaming jurisdiction," said Antonio Ramirez. "It has a strong Portuguese heritage and influence, but is part of mainland China. Several of the most sophisticated gaming companies in the world are investing billions of dollars in Macau, which has a tremendous opportunity to establish itself as a destination resort location well before most other Asian gaming jurisdictions get off the ground." Dickinson Wright's gaming expertise covers the entire spectrum of today's commercial and Indian gaming industries. The firm's Gaming Practice Group lawyers have obtained gaming licenses for commercial casinos, drafted and obtained the approval of state constitution amendments and gaming legislation and regulations, prosecuted patent protections for the gaming industry, rendered advice in the complex field of internet gaming, provided comprehensive legal services in furtherance of the financing construction and operation of casinos, represented a wide variety of gaming equipment manufacturers on a complex array of regulatory issues, defended the industry in state and federal courts in patron, labor and environmental disputes, and worked with governments and casino developers on a international basis. The firm's Gaming Practice Group lawyers also have negotiated tribal/state Indian gaming compacts and tribal/municipality casino development agreements, represented tribal interests nationwide on a wide variety of matters of critical interest to the nation's Indians and guided developers and vendors in the intricacies of tribal sovereign nation contracting.
