Dickinson Wright member and Chairman, Dennis W. Archer, and Dickinson Wright member and President of the State Bar of Michigan, Edward H. Pappas, were named 2009 Leaders in the Law by Michigan Lawyers Weekly. Mr. Archer and Mr. Pappas will be honored as two of 25 leaders in the state's legal community at a luncheon on March 25, 2009 at the Detroit Marriott in Troy, Michigan. The 2009 Lawyer of the Year will be named during this luncheon. For the past 11 years, Michigan Lawyers Weekly's annual celebration of the state's most successful lawyers was called Lawyers of the Year. The change to Leaders in the Law recognizes the need to honor both legal success and qualities of character that make only a few stand out. Mr. Archer is a member and the Chairman of Dickinson Wright. He is a leading commercial and business litigation attorney whose career spans business, public service and the judiciary. He also is involved in corporate governance issues and currently serves on the boards of directors of three publicly traded corporations. He served two four-year terms as Mayor of the city of Detroit (1994 - 2001) and earned national and international respect for his success in changing Detroit's image and direction. Mr. Archer was the first person of color elected president of the American Bar Association and the State Bar of Michigan. He also has served as president of the Wolverine Bar Association and the National Bar Association. He is a former Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court, a Life Member of the American Bar Foundation and the National Bar Association, a Fellow of the International Society of Barristers, a Fellow of the College of Law Office Management, and a Life Member of the Sixth Circuit Judicial Conference. He served as an associate professor at the Detroit College of Law, and as an adjunct professor at Wayne State University Law School. He was named Public Official of the Year by Governing Magazine; the Most Respected Judge in Michigan by Michigan Lawyers Weekly; one of the 25 Most Dynamic Mayors in America by Newsweek; and one of the 100 Most Influential Black Americans by Ebony magazine. He recently was named one of the "100 Managing Partners You Need to Know" by Lawdragon Magazine and one of the "50 Most Influential Minority Lawyers in America" by The National Law Journal. Mr. Pappas is a member of Dickinson Wright and one of the firm's Client Service Directors. He also is the President of the State Bar of Michigan. For more than 35 years, Mr. Pappas has distinguished himself as a civil trial lawyer, mediator, arbitrator, mentor and author. He has successfully represented Fortune 500 companies, smaller businesses and individuals in litigation and arbitration. He is a fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America, a national trial lawyer honorary society comprised of less than one-half of one percent of America's lawyers. Mr. Pappas is also recognized in America's Leading Lawyers for Business, Chambers USA, Super Lawyers (Top 10 in 2008), the Best Lawyers in America (commercial litigation and bet-the-company litigation) and Benchmark Litigation. Mr. Pappas has also mediated all types of civil lawsuits and if a fellow of the American College of Civil Trial Mediators. He also is a fellow of the American Bar Foundation, the Michigan State Bar Foundation, and the Oakland Bar Foundation. Mr. Pappas frequently speaks and writes on litigation, mediation and arbitration issues, and is co-author of Michigan Business Torts, First Edition, 1991, and Second Edition, 2003, Michigan's definitive treatise on business litigation, published by ICLE.
