Dickinson Wright Attorneys Participate in Explorathon 2009, Help Metro Detroit Students Explore Career Options

4/8/2009
Dickinson Wright PLLC attorneys Sharon R. Newlon and Tammy L. Helminski recently participated in Explorathon 2009, a collaborative effort of schools, community and professional organizations, and presented by the American Association of University Women - Birmingham Branch Foundation Inc., in partnership with the Cranbrook Institute of Science. Explorathon presenters help attendees discover careers in science, mathematics, health care and technology. Newlon and Helminski, both environmental attorneys, presented a program entitled "Law and the Environment." More than 700 young women and men, parents and teachers participated in this year's Explorathon. The purpose of Newlon and Helminski's presentation was to give insight into the life of an environmental lawyer. Through two role-play exercises, Explorathon participants learn what it's like to have a career in environmental law. In the first scenario, attendees participate in a mock initial client interview with a new client who has an idea for a renewable energy plant. In the second scenario, participants act as environmental defense attorneys, asking a toxic tort plaintiff questions in a mock deposition. For more information, visit www.dickinsonwright.com.
