Dickinson Wright PLLC attorneys Richard W. Paul and Robert W. Powell will present a program on protective orders, confidentiality agreements and Sunshine in Litigation laws at the 2010 Emerging Issues in Motor Vehicle Product Liability Litigation Conference. The Conference, sponsored by the American Bar Association Tort Trial and Insurance Section, will be held April 8-9, 2010, at the Arizona Biltmore in Phoenix, and is the premiere national continuing legal education event in automotive products liability litigation. Mr. Paul and Mr. Powell's program is entitled "Putting it Where the Sun Don't Shine ? Protective Orders, Confidentiality Agreements and Sunshine in Litigation Laws." Their presentation will address the Sunshine in Litigation statutes enacted by some states and similar federal legislation introduced by Congress to limit a court's ability to enter an order in civil cases restricting disclosure of information obtained through discovery, approving a settlement agreement restricting the disclosure of such information, or restricting access to court records in civil cases. Mr. Paul and Mr. Powell will examine the use of protective orders and confidentiality agreements in automotive litigation and the impact of Sunshine in Litigation laws. About the Speakers Richard W. Paul is a member in Dickinson Wright's Bloomfield Hills, Michigan office. He practices in the areas of products liability litigation, commercial litigation, accountants? liability litigation and professional malpractice litigation. His areas of specialty include defense of automotive manufacturers, GAAS and GAAP litigation, business torts litigation and securities fraud. His trial experience has included representing defendants in products liability, accounting malpractice and medical malpractice cases, as well as litigating a variety of business disputes. Mr. Paul also serves as National Discovery Counsel for Ford Motor Company in automotive litigation. Mr. Paul is a frequent lecturer and has published numerous articles on a variety of legal topics. He served as the Midwest Regional Editor of ?Professional Liability Update,? published by the American Bar Association, Litigation Section Committee on Professional Liability Litigation. He received his A.B. degree magna cum laude from Dartmouth College and his J.D. degree from Boston College Law School. Robert W. Powell is a member in Dickinson Wright's Detroit office, where his practice consists primarily of appellate litigation. He was previously a member and associate at Dickinson Wright from 1982 to 1999, when he left to work in-house at Ford Motor Company. Since returning to Dickinson Wright, Mr. Powell has continued to represent Ford and other clients in appeals, class actions, and legal issues throughout the country, successfully arguing appeals in the Georgia Court of Appeals and the Eleventh Circuit, and is currently handling appeals in New Mexico, New York, South Carolina, and the Tenth and Second Circuits, as well as Michigan. In addition to product liability matters, Mr. Powell has extensive experience in commercial litigation, particularly dealer and franchise litigation, including current matters in New Jersey and Ohio. Mr. Powell has made presentations on legal issues at numerous conferences and seminars. He has authored amicus briefs on behalf the Michigan Defense Trial Counsel, the National Association of Manufacturers, and other industry and legal associations.
