Dickinson Wright Member James Y. Rayis was appointed by the American Bar Association Section of International Law to serve as Co-Chair of the Section's Middle East Committee. The appointment was made at the ABA's 2007 Annual Meeting in San Francisco. Rayis works in the firm's Detroit and Washington, D.C. offices. His areas of practice expertise include international law, corporate law, government procurement and contracting, corporate governance, information technology and security law, and internet and e-commerce law. The 15,000-member Section of International Law is the leader in the development of policy in the international arena, the promotion of the rule of law and the education of international law practitioners. It is the only ABA entity that focuses on the full range of international legal issues and is involved in a wide variety of substantive legal activities. Its objectives are to promote interest, activity, and research in international and comparative law and related areas; to further its development; to diffuse knowledge among members of the legal profession and others; to formulate professional opinion thereon; to promote professional relationships with lawyers similarly engaged in foreign countries; and "to advance the rule of law in the world". The Section's Middle East Committee was formed to unite legal professionals in law and events concerning the Middle East. The geographic scope of the committee covers North Africa, the Arab Peninsula and Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Pakistan, Palestine and Turkey. Rayis's other professional involvement activities include the following: Director, Assyrian Aid Society of America; Member, Chaldean American Chamber of Commerce Iraq Taskforce; Member, Alliance Francaise and French American Chamber of Commerce; Member, Union International des Avocats; Former Advisor to Iraqi Governing Council Members and the Director, Iraq Special Tribunal for Crimes Against Humanity (2003-2004); and former Chairman, International Section, State Bar of Georgia.
