Dickinson Wright Attorney Kenneth W. Kingma to Address ICLE Probate and Estate Planning Institute, May 17 – 19, Acme, Michigan
May 17 2007
Dickinson Wright estate planning expert
Kenneth W. Kingma
, Kenneth W. Kingma will speak at the 47th Annual Probate and Estate Planning Institute that will be held at the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa, Acme, Michigan on May 17 – 19, 2007. The event is cosponsored by the Probate and Estate Planning Section of the State Bar of Michigan.
As part of a panel providing intermediate and advanced training for participants, Kingma will speak at 8:30 a.m. on May 19th about recent events that affect the use of life insurance and irrevocable life insurance trusts (or ILITs) in an individual's estate plan. Part of Kingma's talk will deal with a recent article he wrote for the Michigan Probate and Estate Planning Journal that called for remedial legislation to Michigan's insurance code. One reason for remedial legislation is to grant trustees of ILITs a valid insurable interest in the life of the individual who creates the trust and causes it to acquire life insurance on the individual's life. Kingma's presentation will also focus on the proliferation of so-called "stranger owned life insurance" or "investor-initiated life insurance" programs and the myriad of state law and tax issues generated by those programs. Kingma will be advising estate planning practitioners on how to deal with current issues regarding ILITs and programs that market "stranger owned life insurance" or "investor initiated life insurance." He will also be providing an update on remedial legislation he is involved with that addresses insurable interest issues under Michigan law.
